Wanted: Humanitarian tourists

By Dawna L. Robinson

Looking for something a little different for your vacation? How about going to the central East African country of Tanzania as a humanitarian volunteer? A 14-day trip put together by San Diego-based Edge of World Retreats (EoWR) will let you share your skills and talents with Tanzanian youngsters and adults in need of everything from sanitation education to help on building a schoolhouse. The trip is set for Feb. 15-28, 2010.

“This is a spiritual journey that will transform your life,” says EoWR Founder Tracy Brooks. “It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to not only get the satisfaction of helping others in one of the poorest nations on Earth, but to make a huge contribution toward maintaining the natural beauty and resilience of the area.”

EoWR teamed up with the United African Alliance Community Center to produce the trip, officially called Practicing Authentic Love: Multicultural Engagement in Tanzania. Volunteers have until Jan. 11, 2010, to register.

Cost of the trip is $2,950 per person double occupancy, including roundtrip airfare to Tanzania from JFK International Airport in New York (you'll have to get to JFK and back home on your own). Ground transportation, lodging and itinerary meals are covered in tanzania along with various tours and other activities in addition to your community service projects. Full details of what is and isn't included can be found along with a day-by-day itinerary at www.edgeofworldretreats.com/africa.html.
